Dame Janet Paraskeva - Chair
Dame Janet was Chief Executive of the Law Society from 2000 to 2006, preparing it for the advent of the Legal Services Act 2007 by establishing the separation of regulatory and representative functions.
She has since served as First Civil Service Commissioner, been an independent member of the Consumer Council for Water, a non-executive director of the Serious and Organised Crime Agency, Chair of the Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission and is currently Chair of the Appointments Commission for the States of Jersey.
Dame Janet was made a Privy Councillor to assist in her role as a member of the Detainee Inquiry established by the Prime Minister in 2010.
Alex Clark is the Legal Director and Head of Legal Practice for enact Conveyancing Limited. Enact were formerly the housing arm of Addleshaw's, a major commercial law firm, and now are an ABS whose ultimate beneficial owners are First American Financial Corporation.
Since qualifying as a Solicitor in 1994, Alex, now also a Licensed Conveyancer, has focused on residential and commercial conveyancing latterly specialising in leveraging technology to reduce risk, improve efficiencies and customer service.
Rob Gurney is Chairman, Senior Director and Head of Legal Practice of Premier Property Lawyers Ltd, the first ever Alternative Business Structure in the U.K. Rob is also a qualified Licensed Conveyancer with 16 years of industry experience.
John is a professional member of the CLC Council and a Chartered Legal Executive and Licensed Conveyancer, having qualified in 1987. As the Compliance Director at Total Conveyancing Services in Cheshire, John has specialist experience in all aspects of conveyancing, lender support practice, wills and probate.
John divides his time between his roles in compliance, and as his firm’s senior property lawyer, lecturing and delivering training to staff.
He has written many articles for trade journals as well as a popular series of legal guides for a national magazine.
Jan Smith is Managing Director of The Virtual Company Limited, specialising in marketing, sales and customer experience projects and interim assignments in the UK and internationally.
Her recent work has included Interim Communications and Marketing Director at the Scouts Association, Strategic Advisor to the President, Rosgosstrakh in Moscow, the largest Russian Insurance company, Strategic Marketing Consultant to Whitbread PLC and Interim Marketing and Sales Director for the Open University.
Prior to setting up her own company, Jan held positions as Group Strategic Director of RAC PLC, Sales and Marketing Director of Mazda Cars (UK) Limited, Director of Retail Marketing at TSB Bank PLC, and launch Marketing Director for First Direct.
She is currently Non-Executive Vice Chairman of Saffron Building Society and has previously been Non-Executive Director at HM Land Registry and The Royal Mint.
Heather qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 1982, whilst working for an international electronics group. Her work included assignments in the USA, Italy and France. Following this, she worked for the Ministry of Defence and the Inland Revenue.
Heather went on to become Finance Director at the Land Registry until 2013. She has been an independent member of the CLC’s Audit Committee since 2010. Heather is also a qualified commercial and workplace mediator and has a consultancy business.
Teresa has a background in regulation, consumer protection and consumer affairs. She was Director of Policy and Advocacy at Citizens Advice for 13 years until June 2013. Prior to that Teresa held senior policy roles with the Office of Rail Regulation, Office of Water Services and the National Consumer Council.
Teresa’s non-executive portfolio includes being a board member of the Northern Ireland Authority for Utility Regulation; Consumer Champion for the Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency and Chair of the Affinity Water Customer Scrutiny Group. She is a Trustee of the Fairbanking Foundation.
Andrea is currently a Director and Head of Legal Services of Kings Court Trust, a large provider of probate and estate administration based in Bath. Before joining King’s Court Trust in 2006, Andrea worked as a solicitor focused on private client work.
Alan spent 35 years in Whitehall, holding senior policy, operational, finance and strategy roles in various government departments. As its first chief executive he led the set-up and operation of the Local Government Boundary Commission for England, a small public body.
He is a trustee and audit committee chair of Avenues, a not for profit body which supports people living with disabilities, illness or injuries. He is a senior research associate at UCL Constitution Unit and a member of the Wales Governance Centre’s advisory board.
Quinton Quayle served as British Ambassador to Romania and Thailand before pursuing a career in the private sector. He acquired experience of regulation at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Nursing and Midwifery Council before joining CLC in October 2016.
Quinton currently acts as an Adviser to International Beverages, Prudential and Sindicatum Sustainable Resources and sits on the board of the 2gether NHS Foundation Trust and the Queen's Counsel Appointments Panel.
